Propelling Forward: A Melbourne Woman's Rise in Aerospace Engineering

In Conversation with Jade, a 34-Year-Old Aerospace Engineer from

· Thrive Tales,Be Connected

SheThrives: Welcome, Jade! It's fantastic to have you with us. Could you start by telling us a little about your journey into aerospace engineering?

Jade: Absolutely, and thank you for having me. My journey wasn’t what you'd call conventional. Growing up in Melbourne, I was always fascinated by the stars and the mechanics of flight. Entering a field like aerospace, where women are significantly underrepresented, was daunting. Despite the odds, my passion for aerospace drove me to pursue this career, proving that your background doesn't dictate your future.

SheThrives: What challenges did you face entering such a male-dominated field?

Jade: The challenges were multifaceted, from subtle biases to more overt forms of discrimination. Initially, it was the skepticism from peers and sometimes, mentors. There was this underlying assumption that women might not be as suited for STEM fields as men. Proving my worth meant working twice as hard to earn respect and recognition.

Women in STEM

SheThrives: How did you overcome these obstacles?

Jade: Persistence and finding allies. It's about not letting setbacks define you but fuel your determination. I sought mentors, both male and female, who valued talent over gender. I also joined networks of women in STEM, which provided immense support and opportunities to advocate for diversity in the field.

SheThrives: Can you share a defining moment in your career?

Jade: A defining moment was leading a project that was particularly challenging and innovative. The success of that project not only proved my capabilities but also demonstrated the value of diverse perspectives in problem-solving. It was a turning point, both for me and, I hope, for those who doubted the place of women in aerospace engineering.

SheThrives: What advice would you give to young women aspiring to enter male-dominated industries?

Jade: First, believe in your abilities. The path might be tough, but your unique perspective is invaluable. Seek out mentors and build a support network. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to speak up and take up space. Your voice matters.

overcoming industry barriers

SheThrives: How do you see the future of women in STEM fields, particularly in aerospace engineering?

Jade: The future is promising but requires continuous effort. Initiatives to encourage girls in STEM from a young age are crucial. We need to work on changing the narrative that STEM is not for women. With every woman who enters and succeeds in these fields, we chip away at the glass ceiling for the next generation.

SheThrives: Lastly, what message do you want to leave with our readers?

Jade: To the women reading this, whether you’re in STEM or any other field, know that your dreams are valid and achievable. To everyone else, let's all play a part in creating inclusive environments that celebrate and nurture talent, regardless of gender. Together, we can break more than just the glass ceiling—we can rebuild the entire structure.

SheThrives: Jade, thank you for sharing your journey and insights with us. You're not just navigating the skies; you're helping change the course for many women after you.

Jade's story is a beacon of inspiration, proving that with determination, support, and a strong voice, women can excel and lead in any field they choose. Her journey encourages us to challenge stereotypes and advocate for a world where one's gender does not determine one's career trajectory.
